A Check Valve is used to allow one-way flow of water or other fluids through a pipeline. The primary purpose of a check valve is to prevent (or check) the fluid from backflowing in the opposite direction.
Where Are Check Valves Used?
Check valves (or nonreturn valves) are commonly installed on the discharge side of the pump. A check valve allows liquids to flow in one direction, and closes before the flow reverses to prevent slam and water hammer that can cause damage to process equipment.
A check valve acts as the automatic shut off valve when the pump stops to prevent draining of the system. Pressure Surge (Water Hammer) can be greatly controlled by selecting the correct check valve.
Selecting a Check Valve
Proper valve selection is critical for proper valve performance. When selecting a check valve, these factors determine the ideal valve for your application:
- type of fluid (such as clean water, sludge, or viscous liquid)
- orientation of the valve (vertical, horizontal, or a valve that can accommodate both)

SmartCHECK Pump Control Valves
SmartCHECK Pump Control Valves close when the pump stops - even during a power outage. They use an integrated swing check and electric motor operator to control pressure surge during pump startup and shutdown.
APCO Swing Check Valves
APCO Swing Check Valves are used for clean and dirty applications including sewage treatment, water treatment, water distribution, mining, industrial water and wastewater services. These industrial swing check valves prevent back flow of fluid by closing before flow reversal, preventing slam and water hammer.
Double Door Check Valves

Rubber Flapper Swing Check Valves

Silent Check Valves
Silent Check Valves are used in vertical turbine pump installations when pumping from a well to an elevated reservoir, and are also recommended for commercial and industrial HVAC applications such as heating systems and condensate return lines. These valves close silently to prevent water hammer by positively closing before reversal of flow can occur. The valve is low in cost, reliable and requires no regular maintenance.
Slanting Disk Check Valves
Slanting disc check valves, the most reliable and efficient check valves available, are ruggedly designed with superior flow characteristics, minimal head loss and maximum slam resistance. Slanting Disk Check Valves are ideal for clean municipal/industrial water and other industrial liquid applications.
Full Flow Foot Valves
APCO Full Flow Foot Valves can be continually submerged in a wet well that is not readily accessible for inspection or repair. Foot valves are an inexpensive way to maintain prime on a single centrifugal pump.
Full Flow Rubber Flapper Foot Valves
A Rubber Flapper Foot Valve is installed in the vertical position with the direction of flow in the upward direction. In this position the Foot Valve is normally closed. The Foot Valve opens while the centrifugal pump is running and closes when the pump stops running to maintain a flooded suction and primed pump. They are designed for water or sewage, and suitable for submerged service.
